Panthers TE Greg Olsen Out With Foot Injury Against Jets

Panthers TE Greg Olsen Out With Foot Injury Against JetsThe highly-anticipated return of Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen was cut short during Sunday’s victory over the New York Jets. The three-time Pro Bowler aggravated an existing foot injury during the 35-27 victory.

Olsen fractured his right foot during the second quarter of a Week 2 matchup against the Buffalo Bills. The tight end had surgery in September that involved inserting a screw into his fifth metatarsal to mend the fracture. Sunday’s Week 12 meeting with the Jets marked Olsen’s first game day appearance since suffering the injury.

The tight end reported feeling soreness during the first half of the game, but felt that he could continue playing. Before eventually being pulled out in the third quarter, Olsen was targeted four times and had one 10-yard catch early on.

“I was ready to come back. I felt good. It just wasn’t quite exactly where it needed to be to play in the NFL,” stated Olsen. “So live to play another week. Hopefully it’s better next week.”

Coach Ron Rivera has stated that removing Olsen was precautionary, not at all indicative that Olsen’s season is potentially over. Initial x-rays came back negative, but more tests will be conducted by orthopedist Dr. Robert Anderson on Monday.

There is up to a 20% chance that his Jones fracture will require a second surgery, though players such as Dez Bryant and Julian Edelman were able to finish out their seasons before having additional operations for the same ailment.

Olsen was expected to make his debut along with Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil, who has been out for over a month with a neck injury. Olsen’s return was short-lived, while Kalil was active but did not play.

Though the Panthers did not get the explosive offensive boost they were hoping for, Carolina was still able to up their record to 8-3 as they head into NFL Week 13.

NFL Week 13 Against The Saints

The Carolina Panthers (8-3) will face the New Orleans Saints (8-3) next Sunday in what will be a battle for the NFC South lead. Courtesy of Bovada Sportsbook, the opening line for the Panthers vs Saints has New Orleans favored by 4-points.

Carolina is 12-4 ATS in their last sixteen road games against New Orleans. The Panthers are also 10-5 SU in their last fifteen games playing on the road against the Saints. Expect the game total to be posted mid-week, which has gone over in 5 of the last 6 Panthers vs. Saints matchups.

Though the Panthers previously lost to the Saints during Week 3 at home, both Olsen and Kalil were inactive. If both players are on the field during their Week 13 matchup, it could be a completely different game.
